Reticella is one of the oldest techniques of antique lace, a type of embroidered lace that originated in Italy. This lace first appeared in the early 16th century and was particularly popular during the Renaissance. Reticella evolved from "dronework" (a technique in which a pattern is created by cutting out a section of fabric), a technique in which geometric patterns are decorated on fabric using embroidery.
This lace can also be seen used in the collars worn by noble figures in old portraits, giving a sense of its popularity and history.
