Venetian lace
Originating in Venice, Italy, in the 16th century, Venetian lace is mainly a type of needle lace (lace made with a needle), characterized by extremely delicate and intricate designs.
Compared to other laces, Venetian lace features thickness and a three-dimensional design, with motifs such as flowers, leaves, and fruits often expressed in a raised, sculptural manner.

Lace from the 18th century was highly technical, reflecting both exquisite handcraftsmanship and strong symbolic meaning within aristocratic society.
From large, three-dimensional edgings known as gros point to designs with smaller motifs, the atmosphere of lace—though referred to by the same name—has changed with the times.
In the 19th century, the influence of the Industrial Revolution brought about machine-made lace, and simpler designs suited to mass production became more common. Floral and leaf patterns remained popular, but decoration became even more elaborate, and as the variety of lace types and styles expanded, it also became more widespread among ordinary people, broadening its uses as well.
